YOUTH EMPOWERMENT ACTIVITIES
We are aiming at young leaders and gifted and talented young people as well as young professionals. Millennials, or the Millennial Generation, also known as Generation Y, are the demographic cohort following Generation X. Researchers use beginning birth years from the early 1980s to the early 2000s. Millennials have distinctly different behaviors, values and attitudes from previous generations as a response to the technological and economic implications of the Internet.
Economic prospects for the Millennials have worsened due to the late-2000s recession. Several governments have instituted major youth employment schemes out of fear of social unrest due to the dramatically increased rates of youth unemployment. In Europe, youth unemployment levels were very high (27% in Spain, 35% in the Baltic states, 19.1% in Britain and more than 20% in many more). In 2009, leading commentators began to worry about the long term social and economic effects of the unemployment. Unemployment levels in other areas of the world were also high, with the youth unemployment rate in the U.S. reaching a record level (19.1%, July 2010) since the statistic started being gathered in 1948. Underemployment is also a major factor.
These figures not only point out the dramatic situation for this generation as far as employment is concerned, but also that our society faces the threat of missing a significant part of a whole generation and their influence on the development of society and organizations. and this in a transitional era in which we depend more than ever on new and authentic insights and contributions. The sought after leaders of tomorrow at least do have the chance to be part of the future and should not be excluded.
The one thing we can do to increase the potential influence and participation of talented millennials is to empower the leaders-to-be in order to let them qualify themselves. MOVABLE^LAB does so by offering Lead Labs, Nature retreats and a Think and Do Thank, but also provides more customized activities, like seminars, talks, coaching and mentoring.
